If a preinst fails, will dpkg remove the old binaries for the package? If
not, then place a question in the preinst asking if they want to do an
automated dump/restore. Choosing no at the prompt does an exit 1, install
will fail, and they do the dump on their own before trying the install
again.
Sorry about my limited knowledge of dpkg internals.
