Linux itself is more of a conglomerate of projects; see
http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw/devel.html for pointers. Many of those projects
follow the "bazaar" model of software development
(http://sagan.earthspace.net/~esr/writings/cathedral-bazaar/), and welcome
new developers with open arms.
