I went trough the same process with an installation I did recently, and wasted
a lot of time before I discovered that the "Install base system" menu option
looks for a base*.tgz file on the target partition before asking for
diskettes. If it finds the file it uncompresses it correctly, so there's no
need for running gzip and star by hand.
I don't remember however, which set of disks I used that time, but it seems to
me it was the last stable one.
