 I've been using NTeX, and it works fairly well.  It does something so
that dpkg dependancies are resolved for TeX packages.  I chose it over
TeTeX for its richer set of documentation (includes the TeXBook, by
Knuth) and tk install program.  It uses the TDS; under /usr/lib/texmf.
