Fakeroot error (was Re: Unidentified subject!)

No idea.  You might ask Joost if he's ever seen anything like this.

I've cc:'d debian-devel and what I think is Joost's address for this
purpose.

Have you tried fsck'ing the disks, just for paranoia's sake?
