I think dpkg needs to use gzip to uncompress packages, or does it do
this internally?

If dpkg needs gzip, then gzip should predepend on libc6.  Reason: gzip
must be working all the time, since it's needed to install packages.
If libc6 isn't configured yet, and gzip is unpacked, gzip may not work.

Well, I -thought- that dpkg needed to call gzip, but I now can't find
any evidence of that, so it may be that dpkg is statically linked to
zlib or something...
