So give an option to use -rpath, just don't make it default.
On a slightly different note, several packages using libtool have been
installing '.la' files into their binary packages. These don't appear to
have any relevance to use of the library (someone please correct me if I'm
wrong) and we may want to file bugs against packages that do so.
