After reading my own post I can't refrain from adding:
"And then gets his home-crafted kernel-image automagically replaced with

He probably doesn't even do that, but specify a "--revision" command-line
option in debian/rules instead. It would be a bug if he didn't.
Even more, he too is a user and will probably have a custom kernel-image.
I can't believe that he would use the distribution kernel-image for his
everyday working kernel ( unless he really has 47 network cards, 13 scsi
interfaces, 4 different motherboard chipsets and all sort of other arcane
hardware in his pc - in which case I stand baffled. )
