...I retract myself. Yes, there don't seem to be cases where the
*major* version number does contain a final letter.  It's probably
better to use "libfoo3g" than "libfoog3".

Yes, it is redundant in *most* cases.  However:

* as it has been already mentionned, dropping "lib" from "xlib" or
"libc" doesn't look too good to me

* several packages already do not contain "lib"

Thus, it seems to me a good idea to drop "lib" in package names where
possible, but IMHO this cannot systematically  be used to distinguish
libc5 from libc6 packages.

However, this can be done, but then the whole distribution will be
inconsistent.
