Re: I intend to stand for the project leadership
Some people have questioned my organisational skills. I'll freely
admit that I haven't before run an organisation with as many
contributing members as Debian; however, I have held committee posts
in numerous University societies.
Bruce seems to think I won't have the time, and from his point of view
I can see why he might think that. However, I feel that over the past
5 months since becoming a full-time employee I've been making headway
against my `todo list'; I've implemented severities for the bug system
and reorganised the update-by-email and index systems, and I've spent
a good deal of time writing a program called `userv' which I'll be
announcing here and on linux-security after it's had some
alpha-testing. (In the meantime, see
<URL:http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~ian/userv/>.)
dpkg and Debian organisational politics have now got to the top of my
worklist, and so I intend to start hacking dpkg's dependency mechanism
and taking more of an interest in Debian's politics.
I don't want to take over from Bruce before his term is up; I didn't
announce my candidacy as a result of the recent flamewars, but rather
because Bruce said `noone has put themselves forward yet' and thus
reminded me to do something about it. Furthermore, I wouldn't want to
take the leadership without being elected to it - I'd rather have an
elected mandate.
I plan to have a somewhat more hands-off management style than Bruce;
in particular, I want to delegate technical authority to a committee
of some kind, and develop a formal procedure for resolving both
political and technical disputes. I don't expect to have to use the
leader's fiat power very often.
The reason I didn't reply to Bruce's mail offering me the leadership
and or VP Operations post immediately is that I've been away in
Newcastle visiting my parents for the past 5 days. Another reason is
that I'm not sure what the job description is. I have a lot of
respect for Klee, and if he wants to take the VP Ops post them I'd be
very happy.
Ian.
