I use Perl/Tk, and I can get it to display PPM files just fine. What
code are you using to try to display these files? What happens?

The free version (i.e., the version in the Debian main distribution)
does not support GIFs.

Yes, it's a big problem; but there's really not much we can do about
it except encourage people to move to formats (like PNG) which can be
implemented in free software.
