    I was using perl-tk , which can only display gifs, (it was supposed to 
 display something else, but I couldn't get it to work.  Maybe this will
change soon.)  (Maybe its time to look at python-tk !)
    I got a tip to use ImageMagick from Christian Leutloff
<leutloff@sundancer.oche.de> .  Apparantly you can get a free one that
does not use the compression algorithm. (deb package) 
    I'll try it.  This is a big problem, given the ubiquity of gif .
