emacs20... concurrent versions - policy?



I think some sort of policy dealing with concurrent versions might be a
good thing.  
	
I have encountered a situation very similiar to the one emacs is in
(although I would suppose that emacs is several orders of magnitude more
important than ircIIepic:-).  I have released ircII epic3, which is
compatible for the most part with regular ircII.  However, now 4 is out,
and it is no longer backwards compatible.  It would be nice if there were
some method of doing this without a lot of hassle.  Or maybe there is, and
we need to make it official?
