I had the same problem.  I think it's simply a case that the
new automake includes the same .m4 files that dpkg previously
had to supply.  (I'm not pretending to understand automake
or autoconf here)

I just renamed gettext.m4, lcmessage.m4, and pathprog.m4 so 
that they wouldn't be included.  That seemed to work OK.
