I suspect he means the Makefile in the top directory of the Linux
source tree, which does have a hard coded ARCH = i386 line[1]. When
the architecture specific patches appear [RSN (TM)] this will become a
non-issue.
[1] In 2.0.x, 2.1.x has an incredibly irritating and brain-dead
auto-detection system which assumes I want to build Linux for Sparc
since I'm trying to cross compile an m68k kernel on a Solaris box.
