Compiling XFree 3.3-5.deb

I've downloaded the source from a Debian mirror: used 
dpkg-source -x xfree86

The build process bombs out after a couple of minutes with

no crt1.c 

or some such error message and then dies a couple of errors
later.

make World in the source directory _will_ build all the XFree86 packages
but I daren't make Install because it may not fit in with the Debian
packaging.

Advice please: even building on a PPro it takes an hour or two - having
just downloaded 42 MB I don't want to junk it all !
