Maintainer xearth data file
Hi,
As most of you would be aware, there is a first pass attempt
tot gather maintainer information and present it in a format that is
readable by xearth. Lindsay Allen has graciously undertaken this
task.
An issue that is being raised is collection of email
addresses, and the privacy issue with regards to that.
Maintainer email addresses are found in several places
a) The Debian PGP keyring file, which is widely distributed, and is
present in ftp://ftp.debian.org/doc/debian-keyring.tar.gz and
mirrors, as well as /usr/doc/debian/debian-keyring.tar.gz (part of
the doc-debian package)
b) In the description of the deb files themselves (try dpkg -I *.deb
| grep ^Maintainer). This is also in the available/status files in
/var/lib/dpkg/ directory on all Debian machines.
c) It is easy to construt the address <srivasta@debian.org> by
appending debian.org to user names. This is no big secret.
Why is it that we think we need any other email addresses for
people in the databse? The location data is not available elsewhere,
and I _luv_ the xearth file; but why do people need
srivasta@pilgrim.umass.edu? I think that unless we have compelling
reasons, we should just discard the email addresses being collected
(this would address a number of questions that the effort is
generating).

wondering why we started collecting the email addresses in the first
place.

The Independent quotes this from The Progressive, Sept. 1990:
"Louisiana State Rep. Carl Gunter, explaining why abortion should not
be permitted even when the pregnancy results from incest: 'The way we
get thoroughbred horses is through inbreeding. With incest, you
could get super-smart kids.'" This undoubtedly explains State
Representative Gunter's visibly high intelligence... Lefty
