This is an excellent idea. It doesn't quite touch on the current
dual-interface conflict with install-info, unfortunately.
The options I see are:
(1) provide a clean interface to install-info,
(2) provide an alien interface to dpkg-dir-hooks,
(3) ignore the problem.
er... and
(4) some combination of the above.
