Re: Bug#3253: Pine base64 bug



There are some fundamental misconceptions here about the bug system.
We've been down this road before incidentally, but more than a year
ago.

Whether to call pine's behavior a bug or a missing feature is just a
semantic argument.  The end result must be the same - we document the
bug's state in our tracking system.

Yes, we should have some way to classify bugs in the system.  Until we
do, closing bugs that somebody believes are actually something else is
WRONG.  Hiding them in some file is WRONG.  One day someone will fix
this.

There is no stigma associated with having bugs filed against your
package.  Nobody is calling you a bad maintainer because of
long-standing bugs.

Our goal is to produce the best Unix anywhere, and the bug system is
an integral part of that goal.
