most of the bug reports I've gotten about X problems upgrading from
3.1.2 to anything later (often they went to 3.2, gave up, tried again
at 3.3, and this time worked on it...) were the result of changes in
the available options and sometimes the syntax of stuff in the
XF86Config; simply put, copying the old one out of the way and
rerunning XF86Setup did most of the work...
