unhelpful error messages

>From time to time debian seems to be plagued by unhelpful messages;

[12:17am] root@hamishpc:~# dpkg --configure libc5
Setting up libc5 (5.4.33-5) ...
dpkg: error processing libc5 (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 libc5

Removal and reinstallation (nearly fatal) did not help. Still
not sure what's wrong with it.
