sndstat
I apologize for bothering you. A point to the correct doc, FAQ, html,
etc., will probably suffice.
My professional workstation is now Debian Linux based. For some reason,
/dev/sndstat is missing. There is an ISA sound card using a CD-ROM,
with /dev/sbpcd (and the associated enumerated set) working -- I am using
cdtool as I write. Nonetheless, a number of utilities (including "RealAudio"
which is fast becoming a standard at this site) seem to
require /dev/sndstat . You may note with interest that we are making
professional use of Linux on Intel P family platforms rather than SCO
or the various SVR4 Intel P ports; we are also replacing traditional
RISC Unix workstations in those applications that only require a
general purpose workstation with much more cost effective Intel P
family PCI based Linux boxes. Present production Linux is a very
effective replacement for commercial Unix.
I have not tried a simple MAKEDEV although the required audio device files
are mentioned in the /etc/devinfo file. It is our normal practice
*not* to do development on production machines, and at present I
don't have a similar machine upon which to make tests.
Thanks for any info.
