At Project Athena we found that very few things rely on /etc/passwd
*having a crypt string*. The layout can stay the same, just fill in
"*" as the crypt string, and then you only need to fix truly
user-authentication related things (preferably with something like
libpam, or in the case of screensavers deliberately *not* using the
login password...)
