debiandoc-sgml and figures

[ The first time I sent this the copy to debian-devel got bounced by
the spamfilter. Please feel free to CC linuxdoc-sgml@via.ecp.fr if
  you think it appropriate. ]

I plan to add a figure/diagram/illustration feature to debiandoc-sgml,
and here (debian-devel and linuxdoc-sgml) seemed to be good places to
ask people's opinions:

What format of illustration should I allow `importing' ?

PostScript would perhaps be the most general (most things can be
converted into PostScript) and is easily included in the PostScript
output, and can be turned into a PNG/GIF/JPEG if desired for HTML, but
there are problems with plain text output - what should I do about
this ? Leave the output as a bitmap file next to the text file ?

A PostScript-to-ascii-art converter would be quite nice :-). (And
don't suggest pbmtoascii &c, because they only get a few pixels per
character. I want _real_ ASCII art, or nothing.)

Alternatively I could settle for only allowing xfig-style diagrams -
perhaps there is a better plain text alternative there - or bitmaps.

Ian.
