No, I don't think so either.  I don't think this kind of technique is
needed, either.

Right.  Changes of type 1 are easy and we can just go ahead and do
them.  Any changes of type 2 are the result of bugs - we shouldn't
need to change things like this; it's probably OK to prompt the user
because each bugfix will be a one-off.
