I may have my versions of gs and gsfonts out of sync here but it seems
that gs 4.01-4 expects its fonts to be in
		   /usr/lib/ghostscript/4.01/fonts
and gsfonts 4.01-3 installs them in
		     /usr/lib/ghostscript/fonts.
I put a symbolic link in the /usr/lib/ghostscript/4.01/fonts directory
and that seems to have cured the problem

These versions of gs and gsfonts are the most recent versions in the
unstable directory of the mirror (uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu) that I use.
