Perhaps problems arise when symlinks point to manpages, and then the
manpage is compressed/decompressed, breaking the symlink. If the .so
statements cope nicely irrespective of compression, then it would be
better to use them instead.

Example: recent [nmg]awk pages had this problem, might have been a
change of manpage compression between versions; I manually
decompressed the pages, although I could redone the symlinks.
