For arcane reasons I recently had cause to install Debian on a system
where I couldn't use the usual installation procedure.
I unpacked the base tarfile into the new installation's filesystem,
booted with that filesystem mounted as root, and then ran dselect to
install everything properly.
The results were in general quite encouraging. I had to fiddle about
with some of the /etc files, but no more than I would have had to
anyway given how unusual my requirements were.
I'm using that system now and I haven't found any unexpected effects.
