sure it is. :-)

i pick the points of your post which i have experience with,
don't think that the other points are not just as well valid.

i consider this as a number one problem. the solution to this
seems somewhat simple, even though the work to be done might
be real hard. the problem is, that dselect doesn't use the
--root flag of dpkg (if dpkg can now handle the problems with
that).

given that this is solved we could even install the base system
directly from cdrom, eventually useing a ram disk image as root
device.

a very good idea, makes things much easier for most users.
i think this is the kbd package, right? Hi dominik :-))

i think we needs a full redesign of dselects user interface.
some suggestions:
- the help screen should not pop up. i mean _never_, unless someone
want's to see it and presses '?'
eventually dselect might be called with an option --first-time
(or some heuristic with similar meaning) and pop's up the
  help screen _once_
- return should mean the same thing as cursor down. to install
the packages 'i' is more apropriate.
- after pressing 'i' the dependencies are checked. problems with
the dependencies are shown by the resolve-screen, just as
nowadays, but without the help screen.
- if i press 'i' again, i mean 'install'. it's rather boring to
have the same unresolved dependencies pop up again and again,
thereby removing my selections ever and ever. :-)

IMHO it's better to pop up a box asking 'recheck dependencies
or overwrite them?" (or something similar).

even if i recheck the dependencies, my selections should not be
changed. either i have selected the sugestions of dselect in the
prior round in which case dselect has no new sugestions.
otherwise the sugestions of dselect didn't find my ok, so it
shouldn't try to force me it's thoughts of a good installation.

hmm, just a thought: couldn't we merge all the packages files
and include a field, in which distribution a package lives?
this way dselect could response: xyz needs abc of the non-free
distribution, which doesn't seem to be available.

bad, but unfortunately true... :-(

thanks very much for it. your report is not positive but that's
not your fault. :-)

well, at least this one you will like! :-))
