Source code is available, and I will gratefully accept any patches. The
amount of time I have been able to put to the old versions problems yield
this: As the version source compiles and works in a.out (1.1.1-1) and can
be built ELF by changing termcap with ncurses, but doesn't work. I can
only conclude that it has something to do with the difference between
libc4 and libc5 or between termcap and ncurses. I don't have the resources
to track through the miles of code that comprise octave without the
developer's help. The developer has made it clear that he doesn't want to
talk about 1.1.1 problems.
The a.out version works...

Take a look at SNAPSHOTS.README at the snapshots site, for the general
prohibition against "wide distribution". If that is not enough, John Eaton
has specificaly asked that I not package for distribution, any of the
snapshots, no matter how promising they look.
I will gladly assist anyone wishing to compile and use one of the current
snapshots. There is lots of new stuff to look at.
