Dale and Bill,

Bill is correct that the serial mouse should work with X and gpm without
applying any special magic. I switch between X and console mode and use my
serial mouse easily in each. I have even tried to break it by moving the
mouse and holding down buttons while switching. This also works when I
switch between a console running a svgalib program and X or text (with gpm).

Bill, why don't you email me your XF86Config file (you could send just the
mouse section) and your gpm init file (/etc/init.d/gpm). Also, a listing of
/dev/*mouse* will be useful. Finally, tell me what you can about your mouse
and how it is connected.

Just email me for now, and I'll bounce it back to debian-devel if I cannot
find a problem with your configs.

PS: emacs works fine on my system and I have never seen that problem, so I
cannot help with that.
