The FSSTND says in 5.6:

"A symbolic link from /var/log/utmp to /var/run/utmp may be required
until programs no longer refer to /var/adm/utmp (/var/adm is itself a
transitional symbolic link to /var/log)."

I think you should put it in for compatibility with programs compiled
with old libs.
