Bug#2972: MetaFONT linked against X libraries

I installed debian 1.1 on a system not intending to run X11 so was quite
surprised to find that METAfont was linked against the X11 libraries
(libXt, and libX11) -- this seems slightly unecessary for a program
which is used to generate fonts for \TeX. Is there any good reason for
this?
When I last compiled the \TeX\ system (it was from the standard web2c not
debian), no X11 libraries were linked in. This seems more sensible.
