Except ncftp also triggered the problem, and xterms (well, rxvts) had
been having problems editing long command histories in bash.
I think it was ncurses. Either way, as far as I can tell, it's been
solved for the programs I used that caused me problems by the new
ncurses upgrade.

Don't ask for much, do you?
I daresay that if there is a Perl module for dealing with terminfo, I
might be able to do something like the first part.
