aha!  this may be the solution to my libc upgrade problems - i'll get and
install dpkg-1.1.5 to replace dpkg-1.0.17

btw, libc5 CAN be installed on an R6 system.  You have to install ldso
version >=1.7.14-2 first.  Then you can install libc5, then you can
install the latest ELF dpkg-1.1.x

try libc5-5.2.18-1.deb if libc5-5.2.18-5.deb doesn't work.  I installed
-1 with with no problems a couple of months ago.  If -1 has disappeared
from the ftp sites I can email it to you as I still have a copy.  If
this is necessary then the procedure would be to install ld.so-1.7.14-4,
then libc5-5.2.18-1, followed by dpkg-1.1.5, and finally libc5-5.2.18-5
