Thanks for the info. I have no idea why the binary is static. I'll look 
into the build and see what I can find. 
When it was first reported that octave.bin could not load symbols, I 
started looking into it. I can only get several pages into the help 
screens before the program seg faults. I have e-mailed the upstream 
maintainer about this. His response was: "I don't know anything about 
Linux or ELF." He seems to be busy with the new release and unwilling to 
be diverted to other problems at the moment, so I guess it's up to me to 
figure this out. Any pointers from your end will be gratefully appreciated.
