DNS woes [was Re: dchanges]
Hello Bruce,
here is what Uni-Mainz.DE is getting:
# host -v master.debian.org
Query about master.debian.org for record types A
Trying master.debian.org ...
Query done, 1 answer, status: no error
The following answer is not authoritative:
master.debian.org 169682 IN A 192.6.120.248
Authoritative nameservers:
debian.org 169682 IN NS master.debian.org
debian.org 169682 IN NS CHIARK.CHU.CAM.AC.UK
debian.org 169682 IN NS NS1.WIRELESS.COM
debian.org 169682 IN NS HPCSOS.COL.HP.COM
Additional information:
master.debian.org 169682 IN A 192.6.120.248
CHIARK.CHU.CAM.AC.UK 802 IN A 131.111.131.114
NS1.WIRELESS.COM 169682 IN A 206.13.40.10
HPCSOS.COL.HP.COM 169682 IN A 15.255.240.16
Then i probed the authoritative nameservers:
# host master.debian.org 192.6.120.248
Nameserver MASTER.DEBIAN.ORG not responding
master.debian.org A record not found at MASTER.DEBIAN.ORG, try again
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
( That's the source of the troubles !!! )
# host master.debian.org 131.111.131.114
master.debian.org A 206.139.73.161
# host master.debian.org 206.13.40.10
master.debian.org A 206.139.73.161
# host master.debian.org 15.255.240.16
master.debian.org A 206.139.73.161
So the problem seems to be that the _OLD_ master is listed as first
authority and does not provide an A record for the _NEW_ master.
>From what i understand DNS server will not discard information because
of a DNS error on the other side(call it fail-safe if you like) and
they will not ask the other sources since they can reach what they believe
is master.debian.org.
So the solution seems to be to restart DNS on the OLD master and serve
an A record for the new master...
