Instead of checksums (md5sums take a while to compute and space to store), it might be reasonable to track file write timestamps. [It might also be reasonable to set the timestamp on all files in a given package to some "package unpack time".] [I'm not ready to recommend this yet, but it's an interesting idea.] -- Raul
