Debian sendmail

I know some attempts have been made to improve the Debian sendmail package,
but I don't know what the state of those improvements is nor have I heard
from the current sendmail maintainer about any plans to upgrade sendmail soon.

There are a number of issues here I see needing to be addressed:

  - the current version of sendmail is 8.7.5; the most recent package is
      version 8.6.12
  - sendmail needs to be ELF
  - sendmail needs to use a local delivery agent that uses the proper
      mailbox locking protocol
  - it would be nice if sendmail were more easily configurable

I have put together a package for a local delivery agent, `deliver', that
sendmail can use to properly lock mailboxes.

I have also spent some time constructing a new sendmail package that corrects
all of the above. I would appreciate hearing from people who use sendmail so I
can get an idea how well this package meets the needs of sendmail users. I
will make the package available to people who want to test it.
