By the sound of it, you're missing /usr/lib/libc.so:

$ ls -l /usr/lib/libc.so
lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           24 Jan 15 22:32 /usr/lib/libc.so ->
../../lib/libc.so.5.2.18

This comes from libc5-dev; Ian J. recently had a problem that although he
had installed this, he didn't have the symlink - he solved it by
reinstalling libc5-dev.  I'd try that if I were you.
