Bug#2392: Emacs mishandles fonts under X.

Package: emacs
Version: 19.29-11

After upgrading to this version (elf) of emacs from the previous one,
I get an error on startup (when launching under X) complaining about
missing fonts.

>From *Messages*:

(emacs)
Error in init file: error: "undefined font", "-schumacher-clean-bold-r-normal--12-120-75-75-c-60-iso646.1991-irv"

This font is mentioned in my .emacs file as follows:

(setq my-bold-base-font "-schumacher-clean-bold-r-normal--12-120-*")

It seemed odd that the asterisk got expanded into something ending in
a ^F.

The problem is more serious for the person on the other machine in our
lab. Emacs dies before it can even bring up a window with an error
about internal-face-p not being defined. Even launching with "-q"
won't avoid this.

Our systems are up to date with respect to the development tree on
ftp.debian.org as of this morning.
