What about switching to NYS libc? That should handle all needed authentication
methods transparent to the user.  Soon i will have to recompile our Debian
systems to add true AFS support (if the rumour about Transarc finally making
it available is true). If we would start to use the switching facility of
NYS (which is already included in libc, it just needs to be enable at compile
time!) i would only need to recompile libc and all binaries would use the new
authentication method (well in theorie).  And what about adding RADIUS support,
Kerberos VI/V, DCE and NIS+ and ...  

IMHO NYS is the way to go!
