I haven't tried this yet, but it looks like the way to go... I guess this
makes it a minor affair, but it would be nice if the gpm install script
asked 'Plan to use X11 (y/n)?' since installing xdm and selecting
start-on-boot and then selecting gpm effectively breaks the system.
