Re: netpbm vs. pbmplus

For the record, I have no specific preference as to whether netpbm is
in /usr/bin or some other directory.

[I have a mild preference that non-executables, such as directories,
don't show up in bin directories, but that's not enough for me to take
a stand on this issue.]

My earlier post about dpkg vs. packaging netpbm with its own binary
directory was slanted at the concept that dpkg was inadequate for
package management and that putting binaries in subdirectories was
important for package management. I still feel this way, but I
understand that there may be other reasons for putting a package's
binaries all in one directory.

On the other hand, I have a strong bias towards having key reasons
spelled out. Particularly on a project with as many people involved
as this one. This becomes very important when similar decisions
later.

[Summary: if we're going to start making package-oriented binary
directories, let's have a short list of reasons for doing so in some
cases and not doing so in others. It would probably also be a good
idea to spell out when it doesn't really make a difference which is
chosen. That is, if this is important enough to even bother with.]
