Re: Bug#2182: perl shouldn't touch /usr/local
Robert Leslie:
I think David Engel's solution about /etc/site-perl/
hierarchy is the sanest that emerged in this rather heated
discussion. If the package does not create the directory,
andmerely advises the adminstrator to create a symlink when
needed, I think that /etc is more appropiate that /var/lib, but I
don't feel strongly about it.
First off, I think I need to apologize for any heat -- it appears I
was becoming shrill which has made several discussions heat up.
Secondly, I think that fsstnd should be extended to allow for
directory stubs in /usr/local/lib which parallel directories in
/usr/lib -- this is analogous to putting /usr/local/bin in the default
PATH.
Thirdly, given that fsstnd hasn't been changed, a soft-link under /etc
looks like a viable alternative.
Forthly, another alternative might be to include in /usr/lib/perl5 (or
in similar location for other packages) a readme file explaining in
very simple terms how to set up and enable a local extension
directory. [But this leaves out the question of where does one put
the local extension to enable local extensions -- which makes David
Engel's softlink proposal nice.]
