Just a small note: it isn't my sman.

sman was written by Darren Senn who I have been unable to contact.
I've only fixed some bugs and made some small improvements. I hope to
improve upon it quite a bit, but unfortunately I haven't been able to
spend any significant amount of time on it.

If anyone wants to help improve upon it, I will be quite happy to
incorporate (good) changes. The source will be a part of the Debian
source distribution. It is copyrighted by Darren Senn, but is freely
redistributable.

sman does use ".gz" and comes with `catman', a C-based replacement for
`makewhatis' that works rather well (and quickly too).
