FWIW I've been meaning to inspect the way the Quake stuff is set up, to
consider whether it's a better idea (I suspect so), and whether it's
worthwhile to consider a migration to a similar scheme for the Doom
games. I also plan(ned) to write down the quake scheme in the
doom-packaging¹ guidelines (suitably renamed game-packaging) and revisit
or raise for discussion whether it's worth having that as an actual
package, or as a sub-policy of debian-policy (strengthening from
guideline to policy).

It's sat in my mental todo list alongside some virtual package changes
I'd like to propose in debian-policy, a related debconf helper to write,
and god knows what else ☺
