I think this is a more general problem, I often want to see the
copyright of packages in Ubuntu's multiverse to see why they aren't in
main or universe, or read the changelog before installing updates. In
my opinion, a good solution for this would be a generic mechanism for
downloading package metadata without getting the whole package, which
would handle the three issues of obtaining copyright, changelog, and
screenshot information, and possibly other things, like the relatively
new homepage field. I'm thinking of something like an http get call
that selects a few fields, and then the server returns a control file
snippet with just those fields.
