Yes, I myself met same problem on my amd64 machine.
- both amd64 and i386(under chroot) binaries won't catch any key or
  mouse events.
- I'm using compiz-fusion + KDE. Even I changed to use other window
  managers, it won't solve.
- almost current Debian unstable (Now I'm upgrading again...)
- Core2Duo

My i386 machine works (I built the binary on this machine at first).
- kwin + KDE
- current Debian unstable
- Pentium M
