Well, it seems more logical to me that the maintainer is listed in the
'maintainer' field.
Also, no matter how good the team is, there is always a single person
that carries most responsibility. And I, as a user, would like to know
who that person is. This is how Debian GNOME Maintainers team seems to
work, for example.
Let us just say I believe that authority is a necessary thing.

It is more user friendly. It is listed in a usual place, not flooded
with SVN commit discussions, and other stuff that is of no interest to
anyone outside the team.
